The Boise Business Youth Unity Project (BBYUP) is a community based project that Over the past several years as the Boise neighborhood has revitalized the youth in the Boise neighborhood have become disenfranchised from their own community creating a disconnect between businesses and youth. The Boise Youth Employment Project has been developed to bring businesses and youth together in a positive way.

OUR VISION
OUR PURPOSE
About us
To employ youth through the summer months who are within in the Boise Neighborhood Association area by Boise neighborhood businesses.
Boise Youth Investment Project Concept:

To offer employment to Boise Neighborhood area youth, through dollars and internships supplied by businesses within the Boise Neighborhood Association Area.
Boise Youth Investment Program Infrastructure:

Project facilitation provided through Our United Villages to the Historic Mississippi Business Association and the Boise Neighborhood Association.

Portland OIC will provide private non-profit program funding shelter as well as supply technical, training and program research.

Mayor's Office of Youth Violence Prevention will provide assistance in establishing and maintaining project communications, research support and program sponsorship to other Portland communities as a problem solving tool to assist at risk youth populations and their families.
Stakeholder Mechanics:

Fundraising through a commitment by 170 area businesses of $50 per month for the 3 month summer period of June, July and August 2008, projected to create a employment budget of 25K. Our United Villages will facilitate this fundraising. Portland OIC will create a funding data base and maintain control of funding.

The youth will be required to participate in a two day orientation and training prior to beginning work with their mentoring business.

Portland OIC staff will track youth through the screening, training and employment process for research outcomes.

Boise Neighborhood Association / Historical Mississippi Business Association businesses will supply youth employment/internships through August.
Project Resource Support:

Portland OIC will provide training, record maintenance for youth, and will shelter project budget.

Our United Villages will contact local area businesses for project participation and will sponsor the project through a link on their web pages.

Mayor's Office of Youth Violence Prevention will maintain email and meeting notice communication for the project at the direction of other project stakeholder groups. This office will also assist in promoting the project concept through a web page narrative with web links to the program stakeholder web pages. This office will also promote the project materials on their web page through web links or document archive in PDF format. This office will supply assistance in recording meeting minutes for all project stakeholder meetings.

This office will also offer assistance to Portland OIC in outcome research.
OUR PROCESS
Recruitment
-
Partnering Community Based Alternative schools that serve the Boise Neighborhood youth are Portland OIC/Rosemary Anderson HS.

Flyers and applications are distributed at partnering busniesses.

Interested students complete all aspects of the application and return it to Portland OIC staff no later than the application deadline stated on the application.
Screening
-
Youth will be screened for the following: age, home address, connection to partnering agencies, and ability to work for the summer.

Recommendation from teachers, counselors, or past supervisors.

Youth will be selected for the project based on their applications, recommendations and interview with Portland OIC staff.
Training
1.All participants will be required to participate in a training that will cover the following topics.
a.Attitude of Excellent Service
b.Identifying Customer Needs
c.Thoughtful Body Language and Words
d.Resolving Conflict
e.Exceeding Expectations
Internship

Youth will be partnered with a business in the Boise Neighborhood for 8 weeks @20 hrs a week.

Interviews will be conducted between the business, youth and Portland OIC.

If business and youth find each other acceptable work time and dates will be agreed upon by all 3 parties.

WHO IS POIC?
Portland OIC is a non-profit education management organization, established for 42 years in North Portland, serving over 560 students and work trainees annually, across three programs: Rosemary Anderson High School, Rosemary Anderson Transitions, and Work Opportunities Training.
